Robert Louis Coates
1959 - 2017
LITCHFIELD - Rob passed away unexpectedly at his home on Saturday, April 1, 2017.
He was born in Waterville on June 25, 1959, the loving son of Nancy K. (Bernhardt) and Robert L. Coates Sr.
Rob graduated from Cony High School Class of 1977. He was currently employed by E.S. Boulos Company as a project manager, overseeing substation projects throughout New England.
Rob was a loving husband, father and grandfather whose face lit up like the sun whenever his family gathered. He was happiest in the company of the little ones, teaching them, learning with them, and having fun together.
He was a dreamer, a doer, a visionary, and an inventor.
Although he earned his living as a project manager, Rob was truly a Jack of all trades, with the drive, vision, ideas and ideals to master them all in time.
He was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed hunting, fishing, hiking, biking, sailing and skiing. He was a rescue diver, an actor, and even a tobogganner!
He did and experienced more in his 57 years than most do in much longer lifetimes. He often quoted the proverb, "A man who has friends must show himself friendly," and he lived by that. He made friends wherever he went.
Rob was active in community theater, involved with Monmouth Community Players, ACAT Theater in Waterville, Gaslight Theater in Hallowell, and Johnson Hall in Gardiner.
Rob also made a brief foray into politics by running for State Senate in 2000.
He was predeceased by his father; and is survived by his mother, Nancy K. Winslow, of Crystal River, Fla.; his wife Meredith (Mindy), of Litchfield; three daughters and their husbands, Jessica and Thomas Sholly, of Lebanon, Conn.; Rachel and Casey Cavanna, of Quaker Hill, Conn.; and Heather and Charles McAuley, of Littleton, Mass; five grandchildren, Amelia and James McAuley, Willow and Meadow Cavanna, and Ito Rose Sholly; sisters, Jaye Coates, of Florida; and Carol and Kirk Markee, of New Hampshire; nephew Michael Markee, his wife Heather, and great-nephew Garret, of Lebanon; and former wife Deirdre (Dee) Perry, of Litchfield.
A service will take place Saturday, April 15, at 11 a.m., from Staples Funeral Home, Gardiner. There will be a gathering after the service at the Gardiner Sportsman's Club in Gardiner. A committal service will take place later in the spring.
