1931 - 2018
PUNTA GORDA, Fla. & Rome - Winifred Haug of Punta Gorda, Fla. and Rome, died peacefully at her home surrounded by her husband and family at 11: 18 p.m. April 17, 2018. She was the daughter of the late Paul and Winifred Scott of Springfield, Pa., where she was born on Jan. 2, 1931. She is survived by her devoted husband of 65 years, Arthur J. "Ben" Haug; daughters Mary Ann Larson (Steve) of Chalfont, Pa., Diane Letson of Steamboat Springs, Colo., Maureen Denis of Winslow, Maine and son, John Haug (Eunice Mahler) of Branford, Conn.; and a brother, Ed Scott (Rita) of Pennsylvania, sister-in-law, Bonnie Scott of Pennsylvania, and Norma Haug-Pavlak of Maine. Winifred is predeceased by son Paul Haug; sister, Mary Ward, brother, Paul Scott and brother-in-law, Robert Haug and wife Rosanne.
Winnie was blessed with grandchildren Stephanie and Gregory Larson; Maria, Olivia, Alexandra and Gabriel Mahler-Haug; Lauren and Charlotte Letson; Ashley Rancourt, Nicole Denis (boyfriend, Tim Tracey); Gunter, Grace and Natalie Haug-Pavlak; Great-grandchildren Chase and Sydney Rancourt; and many nieces and nephews.
Winifred is a graduate of the Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur High School and Fitzgerald Mercy Hospital earning her RN degree as a Nurse Anesthesiologist. She worked in the Cedars of Sinai Hospital in Los Angeles, Calif. and as Public Health Nurse in Delaware County, Pa. Winnie married her beloved Arthur "Ben" Haug on Oct. 24, 1953. Together they started married life in Everett, Wash., [7 yrs], where all their five children were born. In July 1960, the family moved to Newtown Square, Pa. [5 yrs], then to Glens Falls, N.Y. (2.5 yrs) and then to Waterville, [19 yrs]. A summer camp on Great Pond, a nearby lake, was purchased and every year from Memorial Day to Labor Day the family spent many summers enjoying the lake. The camp is still owned. Thus began the making of many summer memories including Winnie's tireless hours providing water skiing, swimming, aqua boarding, sailing, canoeing, boating, and fishing for her children and family from Pennsylvania and Wisconsin. In evenings many marshmallows were roasted on sticks at the campfire. She was a great supporter of her children's sport activities, attending each one's events no matter where held or at what time of day or night. They could always look into the stands and find her there cheering for them. Winnie also volunteered her services to the Mansfield Clinic in the Thayer Hospital in Waterville for many years as an RN.
Winnie's final and permanent move was to Emerald Pointe in Punta Gorda, Fla. on Ben's retirement September 1986 to a condo acquired in 1977. They sailed the Florida waters in their motor yacht "Ben-Win" for 12 years, enjoying both coasts. A transfer to a motor home gave her another nine years of travel, always ending at the Maine camp in the summer. The memories were firmly in place and provided solace as her illness progressed.
In the early days of the Emerald Pointe development Winnie was the Social Director and an avid bridge player; she also was a member of St. Charles Borromeo parish, Kingsway Country Club and the Charlotte Harbor Yacht Club.
There will be a Mass of Remembrance for Winifred at St. Charles Borromeo Church on Easy Street in Pt. Charlotte, Fla. on Sunday, Sept. 23, 2018 at 11 a.m. and at Notre Dame Church on Silver Street, Waterville at 11 a.m. on July 7, 2018. Internment will follow in the Pine Grove Cemetery, Belgrade.
