GARDINER -- Richard Lee Whitham, age 81, went to be with the Lord on July 27, 2013. Richard was a longtime resident of Gardiner.

He was born in Hartford, Conn., to Frances and Erwin Whitham. He had four brothers and sisters and graduated from Manchester High School. Richard wed Gertie Mary Peaslee on Nov. 23, 1955. Through the years they resided in Gardiner, Waterbury, Vt., and Tulsa, Okla.

Richard loved learning and held a master's degree in education from Boston University. He pastored and held several positions as a social worker and also taught high school. Richard loved his children and enjoyed going to their school events and sporting activities. He volunteered in the PTA and Little League. In his later years he enjoyed teaching Sunday School at Calvary Foursquare church in Gardiner where he has been a longtime active member.

Richard is survived by his children, Brian L. Whitham and his wife Andrea of Bixby, Okla., Timothy J. Whitham of Tulsa, Okla., Richard W. Whitham and his wife Sandra of Tulsa, and Karen L. Kimbrough and her husband Tony of Northlake, Texas, as well as his son-in-law, Cary Huseman of Tulsa. He is also survived by his brother, John E. Whitham and his wife Sally of Bolton, Conn., and his sister Virginia Andrew of Bella Vista, Ark., 23 grandchildren, 29 great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his wife, Gertie Mary Whitham, his daughter, Brenda J. (Whitham) Huseman, his parents and his brother, George E. Whitham and his sister, Betty J. Messier.

A celebration of his life will be held on Monday, July 29, 2013 at Staples Funeral Home in Gardiner. The funeral service will begin at 1 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that donations be made to Calvary Foursquare church in Gardiner.
