CUMBERLAND - Richard "Dick" Langel Lorenz, 91, passed away suddenly on Dec. 25, 2018, in Cumberland. He was born on July 12, 1927.

Dick leaves his children and their spouses: Al and Trish Lorenz, Barb and Ed Daggett, Bill and Sandy Lorenz, David and Melissa Lorenz, Kevin and Fonda Lorenz, and Sue and Dave Gallant. He was a proud grandfather to Matt Lorenz, Alison Royall, Meredith Duke, Stephanie Daggett, Amy Rhieu, Kevin Lorenz, Tony Lorenz, Julie Lorenz, Dalton Lorenz, Mitch Lorenz, and Kallee Gallant. He also leaves behind seven great-grandchildren. He drove many miles over the years to see all of them participate in graduations, ballets, musical concerts, cheerleading, as well as football, hockey, baseball, lacrosse, softball, and, begrudgingly, soccer games. He is predeceased by his wife of 43 years, Katharine (Kitty), and his beloved grandson, Kevin.

Some of his many interests included trains, the Patriots, hunting, fishing, reading, and playing cribbage. Additionally, he was a lifetime member of the American Legion and a past commander of Post 2; formerly an active volunteer for the Augusta Babe Ruth; and for many decades he could be heard announcing for the high school basketball tournaments at the Augusta Civic Center.

Dick was born and raised in Arlington, Mass., the son of Wilbur and Mary (Langel) Lorenz. He graduated from Massachusetts Maritime Academy in 1947 and served in the U.S. Navy. He retired from Cianbro after more than 20 years of employment. He moved to Maine in 1954, living in Augusta, Chelsea, and Gardiner before moving to Cumberland in 2013.

Visitation will be held on Friday, Jan. 4, from 9 - 11 Plummer Funeral Home, 16 Pleasant St., Augusta. A Celebration of Life service will immediately follow the visitation hours.
