WEST GARDINER – Paul A. Whitley, Sr. 77, of West Gardiner, died on Sunday Feb. 3, 2019, at Maine General Medical Center in Augusta with his loving wife by his side. Paul was born in Newport, Maine, on Jan. 15, 1942, the son of Herbert, Sr. and Marjorie (Patchell) Whitley. He attended schools in Newport and joined the United States Marines Corps where he served from 1962 to 1966. While in the Marine Corps he obtained his GED. After his discharge he completed two years of accounting at the Augusta Business School. Paul worked various jobs, he was a delivery driver for Hood, and then he was hired by the United States Postal Service and retired from the Eastern Maine Processing Facility in Hampden, in July of 1998 after 30 years of Government service. Paul loved hunting, fishing, and the outdoors, but his biggest passion was farming. He raised chickens, turkeys, lamb and beef, including Scottish Highlanders at his farms in Windsor. He and his wife always had large gardens and processed them together to share with family and friends. His brothers who lived in Massachusetts would come to Paul's farm every November to go hunting. Paul often went ice fishing with his best friend, Tom. He loved his grandchildren. After his retirement he and his wife moved back to the Gardiner area so they could be near the grandchildren and watch them grow up. He is predeceased by his parents; two brothers Herbert and Norman Whitley, and a sister Joanne Hampton. Paul is survived by his wife Heidi Whitley of West Gardiner; a son Paul Whitley, Jr. and wife Kim of West Gardiner, a daughter Vicki Bryan and husband Shawn of Winslow, a stepson Travis Eldridge of South China; a brother Donald Whitley, a sister Faye Willey, both of Lincoln; 10 grandchildren, Bryant, Jacob and Connor Whitley, Kiersten Weed, Marissa Giggey and husband Derrick, Brenden Weed and wife Rachel, Suzanne and Michael Bryan, Alexis and Olivia Eldridge. The family would like to thank the doctors and especially the compassionate nurses at Maine General Medical Center who tended to Paul during his illness. A memorial service with full military honors will be held at the "New" Maine Veterans' Memorial Cemetery Chapel, 163 Mt. Vernon Rd., Augusta, on Friday March 1, 2019, at 12 p.m. A celebration of Paul's life will follow at the Augusta Elks Lodge, Civic Center Drive, Augusta.
