Louise Quinn Hathaway
1920 - 2018
GARDINER - Louise Marie Quinn Hathaway, 97, of Gardiner, passed away peacefully on June 6, 2018, at Glenridge Nursing Home surrounded by her loving children and grandchildren.
She was born on Dec. 19, 1920, in Milton, Mass. to John and Louise Quinn, first generation Irish-Americans. At a young age, the family moved to Gardiner to work in the Gardiner Shoe factory. She attended Gardiner area schools and was a cheerleader at Gardiner High School. She graduated in the Class of 1938 and every year enjoyed riding in the "Class of '38" convertible in the Gardiner Memorial Day Parade. This year she celebrated her 80th high school reunion.
In 1946, she married her sweetheart, Bill Hathaway of Randolph, when he returned from his service in World War II. They raised their three children, Nancy, John, and Mark, in Gardiner and were members of St Joseph's Parish. She also worked as a teacher's aid in Gardiner Public Schools and as a Library Assistant at UMA. She loved raising her family in such a friendly town and participated in many activities, including Friends of the Gardner Common and the Gardiner Public Library.
As she grew older, she very much enjoyed and appreciated the care she received while living in the Woodlands in Hallowell and at Glenridge in Augusta. At both homes, she continued to practice her passions of crossword puzzles and cribbage, becoming known as the "Queen of Cribbage" after her many competitions with the staff.
Louise was predeceased by her husband William G. Hathaway, and her brother John J. Quinn. She is survived by her loving children Nancy Hathaway of Surry, W. John Hathaway and his wife Suellen of Kennebunkport; and Mark Hathaway of Englewood, Fla.; her brother-in-law Jim Hathaway and his wife Polly; and her grandchildren: Christiaan Highsmith and his wife Meredith Osborn and their children of San Francisco; Jamie Highsmith and his wife Rachel of NYC; Jessi Hathaway and Bryan Raymond and their children of Kennebunkport; Caitlin Hathaway of South Portland; Elizabeth Hathaway of San Francisco; Ephraim Hathaway of Texas; Garnet Hathaway of Calgary, Alberta; and, Molly Hathaway Hanley and her husband Nate Hanley of Dresden, Maine. Louise valued education and travel and was always proud of the adventures and achievements of her children and grandchildren.
There will be a visitation on Friday from 4-7 p.m. and a memorial service on Saturday at 10:30 a.m. at the Staples Funeral Home, 53 Brunswick Ave., Gardiner. The service will be followed by a reception at the Gardiner Public Library at 11:30 a.m.

Louise has requested any
donations be made to her Louise Q. and William G. Hathaway Fund created to support the purchase of reading materials for the
Gardiner Public Library, one of Louise's greatest passions.
The family is very grateful
for your support
