Lester E. McKenney
1939 - 2016
MADISON - Lester E. McKenney, 77, passed away on his terms on June 9, 2016, after a long and heroic battle against COPD with his daughter and her partner by his side. He was born in Madison on May 17, 1939, the son of Newall and Lillian (Stoodley) McKenney.
He graduated from Madison High School class of 1959 and was also a proud graduate of Kennebec Valley Community College. He proudly served his country in the US Navy aboard the USS Forrestal until his honorable discharge in 1968. He had numerous manufacturing jobs over the years, including local shoe shops and Laurel Plastics in Skowhegan and later enjoyed working at Campbell's Building Supply in Madison until his retirement.
Lester had an amazing sense of humor and his biggest joy each and every day was to make people smile and he succeeded in making that happen. Everyone who knew Lester loved him not only for his humor and constant smile but his delicious homemade donuts and peanut brittle. He enjoyed his Wednesday morning breakfast outings with friends and family, especially because it gave him the opportunity to tease the waitresses. He was immensely proud of his grandson and loved to brag to anyone that would listen, about his success at school as well as his performance on the athletic fields and courts. He was always there to cheer on he and his teammates at every event he was able and often arrived with treats for the team and fans. He was known as "Ba" to all of the kids and fans and was so very proud of that. Lester was also extremely proud of his daughter for her accomplishments both as a mother and for her academic successes when recently returning to school to earn her teaching degree.
He is survived by his daughter, Angel Brewer and partner Robert Bellavance of Norridgewock; his grandson and the light of his life, Ian Brewer of Norridgewock; two brothers, Sherwood McKenney and wife Gladys of Madison, Douglas McKenney and wife Bernadette of Americus, Georgia; a sister, Dona McKenney of Norridgewock; many much loved nieces, nephews, and cousins; his family and extended family "on the hill"; and countless cherished friends from across the country including his most dear US Navy shipmates and friends of over 50 years, Dave, Ski and Bud. He was predeceased by his parents, Newall and Lillian McKenney; sister, Diane Douin; and daughter Nichole McKenney.
A graveside service will be held Saturday, June 18, 2016, at 11 a.m. at the Forest Hill Cemetery in Madison, with Phil Curtis officiating. A celebration of Lester's life will follow at his daughter's home on Burrill Hill Road in Norridgewock.
