Lawrence Dube
1930 - 2015
AUGUSTA - Lawrence Dube of Winslow, died peacefully at the age of 85 in the early morning hours on Wednesday, Aug. 19, 2015, at the VA Medical Center, Togus Springs (Hospice Ward), after a long battle with Alzheimer's disease. Born on May 13, 1930, in Grand Falls, New Brunswick, Canada, Lawrence moved to Augusta when he was 14 years old with parents Emile and Bertha (Albert) Dube and his three siblings.
He joined the Air National Guard at the age of 18, serving for 27 years. He also served two and a half years of active duty in the Air Force during the Korean War.
Lawrence worked for Metropolitan Life Insurance Company for 30 years, beginning his career there in December of 1954 as a salesman, later moving into management at the Augusta branch before he retired and returned to the grocery business.
As a young man, his first job was at Michaud Bros. grocery store. Later in his life, that experience proved valuable as he owned and operated Dube's Market from 1980 to 1989. A man who thrived on finding new challenges and opportunities, he sold "the store" and moved on to a third career by managing the Customer Service Department at NRF, retiring for the final time at the age of 75.
He was a long standing member of the Calumet Club, where he was honored in recent years as a 50-year member. He served on the Board of Directors for the KV Federal Credit Union for 20 years, two years as president. In his spare time, he loved to golf with his wife Madeleine and they were often seen on the links at Natanis. He also leaves behind beautiful paintings, which his family appreciates very much, the result of another favorite hobby of his.
To his friends and family, he was the quintessential example of hard work, strength, and unconditional love and acceptance. His quiet leadership, warm laugh, and oversized heart will be missed more than words can express.
He was predeceased by his brothers: Romeo and Leo Dube. Lawrence is survived by his wife Madeleine (Dostie) Dube; his sister, Zita Bolduc of Lewiston; daughter, Patricia Dube Smith and her husband Michael Smith, along with their children: Oren Smith, Jillian Smith-Lakow and her husband Robert Lakow; daughter, Elizabeth Soucie Hicks and her husband Donald Hicks, with her daughter Nicole Pecoy and her husband James Pecoy and their children Aleise and Jocelin Pecoy, her son Dominic Soucie and fiancée Tacy Taylor; son Lawrence Emile Dube and his wife Susan LaPlante-Dube, with their children Madeleine, Noah, and Ethan LaPlante-Dube; daughter Lisa Haskell-Whitcomb and husband Beecher Whitcomb with her daughter Danielle Haskell.
Relatives and friends are welcome to a wake in remembrance of the late Lawrence Dube from 4-8 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 23, at Plummer Funeral Home, 16 Pleasant St., Augusta, where officers and members of the Calumet Club are asked to meet at 4 p.m. to recite prayers for their departed member.
