1924 - 2017
AUGUSTA - John Knowlton Butts died Jan. 30, 2017, in Augusta. He was 92.
John was born July 22, 1924. in Concord, NH, the son of Grace (Knowlton) and Otto Almon Butts. He graduated from Concord High School and served in the Army Air Force in World War II, attaining the rank of second lieutenant. He flew more than 20 missions over Germany in early 1945, serving as a B-24 navigator in the 856 Bombardment Squadron, 492nd Bomb Group ("Carpetbaggers") of the 8th Army Air Force.
After the war, he attended and graduated from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, NY on the GI Bill and earned a degree in civil engineering. He worked for the Maine Department of Transportation for nearly 40 years as an engineer. After retiring, he served as executive secretary for the Maine State Board of Licensure for Professional Engineers.
John was devoted to his family and loved to spend summers at the family cottage at Birch Point in West Bath. He was a humble and quiet man who showed his love for his children and grandchildren by building treehouses, jungle gyms and skating rinks. He was an avid reader of American history, played the clarinet and enjoyed jazz, swing and classical music as well as ballroom dancing. He was a volunteer for the Boy Scouts, Augusta South Little League, Unitarian-Universalist Community Church in Augusta and a long-time member of the Maine Historical Society and Maine Genealogical Society.
John leaves behind his wife of 65 years, Ruth (Williams) Butts of Augusta. He is predeceased by his sister, Caroline Butts Dodge of Newburyport, Mass. He is also survived by his three sons, Daniel Butts and partner Julie Michaud of Presque Isle, John and Cindy Butts of South Windsor, Conn. and Thomas Butts of Reston, Va. and his partner Tom Salyachivin of Lorton, Va.; six grandchildren, Ashley and husband Travis Moore of Durham, Daniel Butts and wife Kaitlyn of Mapleton, Annie Butts and Michael Butts of New York, NY, Kyle and Christopher Salyachivin of Lorton, Va.; three nephews, David Dodge and wife Magna of Cornwall, Vt., Richard Baker of Lambertville, NJ, and John Dodge and wife Ann Dooley of West Newbury, Mass. and their children Christopher Dodge of Boston and Katie Dodge of Brooklyn, NY.
A memorial service for John will be held at 3:00 p.m., Thursday, Feb. 2, 2017, at the Unitarian-Universalist Community Church, 69 Winthrop St. in Augusta.
