PITTSFIELD - Janice Elaine Dunphy McGowan, 77, died peacefully on Thursday, Jan. 3, 2019, after a courageous battle with lung cancer, in Pittsfield.

She was born on April 11, 1941, in Burnham, the daughter of the late Hillis and Josephine (Reed) Dunphy. She married Robert McGowan on June 20, 1959. Janice worked for Ethan Allen Furniture in the early 60s and from 1967-1972, she was employed at Galusha's Inc., in Clinton. She retired from the Federal Trust Company, in Waterville, in 1993, after being employed by them since 1972.

Janice enjoyed sewing, knitting, crocheting, jigsaw puzzles and diamond painting. Over the course of her life, she had made hundreds of quilts and afghans. Traveling across the state of Maine and Canada to see lighthouses was one of her favorite things to do. She visited many covered bridges in Maine, New Hampshire and Vermont. She was a member of the Burnham Extension for many years and served as the treasurer for more than 20 years.

She is survived by her loving husband of 59 years, Robert McGowan, of Pittsfield; two daughters, Susan Huffer and husband, Alan, of Detroit and Rhonda Kennedy and companion, Martin Harris, of Oakland; grandchildren, Ashley Kennedy and fiancé, Adam Aranda, of Palmdale, Calif., Kristi de Bree and husband, Chris, of North Waterboro, Megan Huffer and fiancé, Sam Roberts, of Sangerville and Shane Huffer, of Portland; great-grandchildren, Audrey and Amelie Aranda, Marlowe and Ira Roberts and baby boy de Bree, due to be born in April; and many nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her parents; and four brothers, Richard Dunphy, Linwood "Red" Dunphy, John Dunphy, and Reed Dunphy.

The family will receive friends from 4-6 p.m., Thursday, Jan. 10, at the Shorey-Nichols Funeral Home, 191 Hartland Ave., Pittsfield. A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m., Friday, Jan. 11, at the funeral home. A spring committal service will be held at the Greenlawn Rest Cemetery, in Clinton.
