WATERVILLE - Herbert J. Jabar died peacefully at his home with his loving wife June by his side on Friday, Sept. 23, 2016, at the age of 91.
Herb was the oldest of George and Amelia Jabar's eight children. He graduated from Waterville High School in 1943.
Following graduation, Herb joined the U.S. Navy to fight in WWII. He served on the aircraft carrier "Bunker Hill" in the South Pacific when it was hit by two kamikaze airplanes causing numerous deaths.
Following his military service, Herb attended Boston College with his three brothers, Norm, John, and Paul. Herb and his three brothers transferred to Colby College, where he was a three-sport athlete playing football, basketball and baseball. Herb and his brothers all received their diplomas from Colby at the same commencement in 1952.
Herb began his teaching and coaching career at Clinton High School, where he coached Clinton to the Eastern Maine championship in the mid 1950s.
He moved his family to Nashua, N.H., to teach and coach at Bishop Guertin High School. He remained in New Hampshire for the rest of his teaching and coaching career.
He returned to Maine upon retirement in 1990. He and June lived in Waterville, spending wonderful summers on Great Pond. Herb loved the family traditions of Wednesday fishing night and Monday night football with his father and brothers.
The family will always be grateful to Herb and June for the wonderful care they gave to their mother for the last six years of her life, and the wonderful care June gave to Herb these past eleven years.
Herb is survived by his loving wife, June; and his children, Michael, Gregory, Lori, Tammy and Stephanie; his eight grandchildren and three great-grandchildren; and June's son, Michael. Herb also is survived by his five brothers and two sisters, Norm and Gerry Jabar of Portland, John and Marge Jabar of Waterville, Paul and Jackie Jabar of Augusta, Theresa Lee of Waterville, Tony and Marlene Jabar of Zephyr Hills, Florida, Reggie and Ted Santos of Arlington, Va., and Joe and Renee Jabar of Waterville.
