GARDINER - Harriet Anne Reiter passed away Sunday, Dec. 16, 2018. She died peacefully surrounded by her son, daughter-in-law, grandchildren and her two little doggies.

Harriet was a native New-Yorker, born in Brooklyn, Dec. 7, 1939. She grew up in a brownstone on Flatbush Avenue, with her two little brothers, Harry and Eddie Wade, and her mama, Anna and her dad, Harry. She graduated from 207 District Elementary and Maddison High and kept in touch with many of her classmates over her lifetime.

She married George Lee Reiter in March of 1969, and adopted her son, George, in July of 1970. After a few years, Harriet and George moved to Rio Rancho, N.M., where she would spend most of her adult life. Harriet was an insurance sales person, a travel agent and a Boy Scout master. She was also an avid bowler and a volunteer. Harriet enjoyed bringing her little doggies into nursing homes to visit with the residents in her spare time.

Harriet also enjoyed going to the casinos with her mother, brothers and their wives, where she would spend only $20 each visit, win or lose. One of her favorite pastimes in New Mexico was spending holidays with her family, with late night coffee and dessert.

In 2013, Harriet moved to Gardiner, to be near her son, George, and his family. While living in Gardiner, Harriet lived in a very supportive community on Liberty Street. She loved walking her dogs, daily, in the Commons and around her neighborhood, and she became affectionately known by many locals as "The Dog Lady".

Harriet is predeceased by her mother and father, Anna and Harry Wade.

She is survived by her son, George Reiter and his wife, Cindy; her 3 grandsons, Noah, Matthew, and Ruel; her brother, Edwin and his wife, Katharine Wade, their children and grandchildren; her brother Harry and his wife, Kathy Wade and their children and grandchildren; her aunt, Helen Halligan; and cousins, Tom and his wife, Dee, Joe and his wife, Constance; Helen's daughter and Harriet's cousin, Maryann and Vaughn and their children; her adopted sister, Coral.

Visiting hours will be held on Saturday December 22, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., at Staples Funeral Home and Cremation Care, 53 Brunswick Avenue, Gardiner, where a funeral service will follow at 1 p.m. A spring burial will take place at Oak Grove Cemetery in Gardiner.
