H. Alan Timm
1926 - 2017
MANCHESTER - H. Alan Timm, 90, peacefully passed away on Tuesday, Jan. 3, 2017, from congestive heart failure, surrounded by his children at Maine Medical Center, Portland.
He was raised in New Haven, Conn., the son of Anne and Henry Timm.
He attended Brown University, the University of New Haven, and Stonier Graduate School of Banking. He completed his B.S. at the University of Maine at Augusta later in life.
He married Barbara Belle Mead on April 8, 1950. Barbara and he moved to Maine in 1959 so he could start employment at First National Granite Bank, which later became Bank of Maine. During his tenure, the bank grew from one location to nine. He was president and CEO until 1984.
He was then director of the Maine State Lottery from 1985 until 1987. He was president of the Augusta Board of Trade, trustee of the Maine Maritime Academy, director of the Federal Reserve Bank of Boston, member of the Governor's Workers Compensation Study Committee, chairman of the Maine Recreation Authority, the Maine representative of the National Advisory Committee of the Small Business Association, president of the Kennebec Valley Medical Center, president of the Kennebec Valley Chamber of Commerce, and board member of the Family Violence Project.
Mr. Timm had been a member of the Augusta Country Club since 1959, serving as president of the board of governors and president of the board of the Augusta Golf Company.
He always believed that his most important job was being a husband and a dad, home for dinner every night, weekends at the Cobbossee Lake camp or Sugarloaf.
Alan and Barbara traveled to Russia, China, the Caribbean, throughout Europe, and the United States. In later years, they divided their time between Maine and Longboat Key, Florida.
He was predeceased by Barbara in June 2014 after 64 years of marriage. He was also predeceased by Doug's daughter, Melissa Timm.
Alan is survived by his daughter, Betsy, of Falmouth; sons, Douglas, and his wife Andrea, of Scarborough; and Jeffrey, and his wife Mary, of Manchester; as well as grandchildren, Jill Metcalf and her husband Chris, Laura Greenstein, Daniel and Benjamin Timm, and Victoria Timm.
It is the wish of the family that there will be a private graveside ceremony at a later date. Arrangements have been entrusted to Plummer Funeral Home, 16 Pleasant St., Augusta. Condolences, photos and memories may be shared at: www.plummerfh.com.
