Elaine (Harvey) Somerville
1928 - 2017

MANCHESTER - Elaine Somerville, 89, died peacefully on Feb. 18, 2017, at her home in Manchester, surrounded by family.

Elaine was born Jan. 9, 1928, in Waterbury, Conn., the eldest daughter of Robert and Lois (Treat) Harvey. She and her sister Marcia enjoyed summers at their grandparents' cottage at the Connecticut shore. She attended Waterbury schools, graduating from Crosby High School, then attended Bates College in Lewiston.

It was there that she met Alex Somerville, whom she married on Feb. 23, 1952, after graduating from Bates. They lived in Lewiston before settling into their home on Central Street in Gardiner, where they had two children, Robert and Janice.

Elaine worked at the telephone company in Lewiston and Augusta; Then, after raising her children, she helped develop the Gardiner Federal Credit Union, which she operated from her living room with one filing cabinet, before its first location was established on Brunswick Avenue in Gardiner.

She and Alex moved to Cobbosseecontee Lake in Manchester in 1985, and after Alex passed away, she married Ron Wallace of Augusta in 2003. Her daughter Jan and son-in-law Don Emerson lived with her and cared for her in Manchester over the past 3 years.

She had many hobbies, knitting, sewing, quilting, making pierced lampshades, refinishing furniture, doing crossword puzzles, gardening, golfing, and playing bridge. And she was appreciative of the little joys of life, flowers (especially pansies), sunsets on the lake, ice cream, cards and pictures from her family, and phone calls from friends.

Elaine was predeceased by her husband Alex Somerville, her husband Ron Wallace, her sister Marcia (Treat) Olsson and Marcia's husband Bill Olsson.

She is survived by her son, Rob Somerville and wife Brenda Gushee (Rockland), and by her daughter Jan Somerville Emerson and husband Don Emerson (Manchester); her four grandchildren, Kate Somerville (Portland), Elise Emerson Granholm and husband Sven (Hapeville, GA), Jared Emerson and wife Katie (Rangeley), Elaine Emerson Garnett and husband Nate (Lisbon Falls); and nine great-grandchildren, Isla, Bjorn, Magnus, Greta, and Lovisa Granholm, and Joseph Rucker, Lily, Wesley and Henry Emerson.
