1941 - 2016

BELGRADE - Edmond Bernatchez, 75, of Belgrade passed away at Togus VAMC Hospice Unit on Sept. 23, 2016 after a long illness. He was born in Waterville, Sept. 9, 1941, the son of Hilma (Smedberg) and Napoleon Bernatchez. Ed attended school in Oakland.

He served as a paratrooper in the US Army with the 82nd Airborne. He married Christine Rackleff in 1962 and together they raised two sons.

He was an American Softball Association (ASA) umpire and an avid hunter and fisherman. He enjoyed coaching his sons in basketball and baseball. He was a proud grandfather who loved to watch his grandchildren play field hockey, football, basketball and lacrosse. Ed spent his career working in the poultry industry.

Ed was predeceased by his parents; and brothers Roger Bernatchez and Ervin Blanchette.

He is survived by his wife Christine; sons Brian (Amy) and Brad; grandchildren Katie, Kristy, Jack and Brandy Bernatchez; brothers Warren (Carol) Bernatchez and Cleon Bernatchez, sisters June (Roland) Quirion, Paula (John) Carey, Kathy Colwell, Carla Webster and sister-in-law Karen Bernatchez.

The family would like to thank Home Telehealth nurse Jane Banks, R.N., from the Togus VA Medical Center, for her advocacy and support over the years.

Edmond will be buried at the Veterans Cemetery in Augusta in a small, private service.
