HALLOWELL -- Dorothy Faith Mithee, 64, passed away peacefully in her sleep, at her home, after a year and a half struggle with cancer, on Tuesday, June 12, 2012.

She was born in Dover-Foxcroft on March 21, 1948, the daughter of Viola and Erwin Mithee.

Dot was educated in Guilford public schools. She graduated from the University of Maine at Farmington in 1970, where she earned a bachelor of science degree in human services.

As a child, Dot worked in the hometown general store owned by her parents. Later, she was employed by the state of Maine in the Office of Substance Abuse Prevention, from 1974 through 2001. She was very active in her community over the years, where she served as Hallowell city councilor and was the recipient of the Hallowell Spirit of America Award on several occasions, eventually becoming president of the foundation.

She was one of the founding members of the Hallowell Food Bank in 1988, where she acted in several capacities, two of which were president and treasurer. Dot worked for and volunteered with both Big Brothers/Big Sisters of Kennebec Valley and Catholic Charities of Maine.

Not only will she be lovingly remembered as a woman full of joy with a wonderful sense of humor, but one with marvelous integrity, all of which she exhibited right up until she took her last breath of life.

She will also be remembered for her delicious coleslaw and chicken pie.

Along with her parents, Dot was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas Jones.

She is survived by her brother, Thomas Mithee, and his wife, Shelley, of Kansas City, Mo.; a niece and a nephew, Rebecca Colson, and her husband, Andy, of Kansas City, and Timothy Mithee of Chicago, Ill.; myriad loving friends and neighbors; her very special and close friends Cindy Chick, of Manchester, and David Archibald, of Augusta; her lovely, compassionate hospice nurse, Karen Gallant; and last, but not least, her adored dog, Max.

A celebration of Dot's life will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, June 18, at Old South Congregational Church, Second Street, Hallowell, with the Rev. Nancee Campbell officiating.

A reception will immediately follow at Joyce's Restaurant in Hallowell. Interment and committal prayers will be at 9 a.m. Tuesday, June 19, at Hallowell Cemetery.

Dot's wishes were to have donations in her memory sent to the Hubbard Free Library, 115 Second St., Hallowell, ME 04347.

Arrangements are in the care of Knowlton & Hewins Funeral Home and Cremation Service, 1 Church St., Augusta, where memories, condolences, photos and videos may be shared with her friends and family on the obituary page of our website at
