David A. Stewart
1937 - 2018

HALLOWELL - David A. Stewart, 80, died unexpectedly, Friday, June 1, 2018, at the Alfond Center for Health in Augusta. He was born in Vassalboro on Sept. 14, 1937, the son of the late John W. and Isabella D. (Davenport) Stewart.
Mr. Stewart was a graduate of Hallowell High School, attended the University of Maine at Farmington and was a U.S. Navy Veteran.

He was the owner of the Corner Music and Piano Shop in Hallowell. The shop had been located in Augusta for several years under the name, Corner Music and Book Store.

He previously worked for the Department of Transportation and taught school at the Belgrade Grammar School.
More recently, he worked for Cyr Bus Line driving a school bus in the Farmingdale area, as well as fixing clocks as Piano and Clock Services.

Mr. Stewart was a member of the Knights of Columbus, both third and fourth degree and was a life member of the American Legion, as well as a communicant of St. Augustine Catholic Church.

David was well known for his piano and organ playing in the area. He played at many funeral services and Sunday Mass, as well as at Togus for services for the veterans. For many years, he played in and directed the music section at Chizzle Whizzle at Cony High School. He was a square dance caller for many years in several square dance clubs in Maine.
He was a well-traveled man, taking trips to various places, especially China. He learned to speak Chinese and travelled there on several occasions.

Mr. Stewart was pre-deceased by a brother, John Stewart.

He is survived by his two sons: Alan W. Stewart and his wife, Linda, of Kingfield and Kent D. Stewart and his wife, Theresa, of Winthrop; seven grandchildren: Sara Perry, Amanda Libby, Kevin Keezer, Joshua Stewart, Tyler Reeve, Gabrielle Stewart, Hailey Legere and several great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews and cousins.

Relatives and friends may visit on Friday, June 8, from 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. at Plummer Funeral Home, 16 Pleasant St., Augusta, where a funeral service will be held on Saturday, June 9 at 11 a.m. Burial and committal prayers will be held in Maine Veterans Memorial Cemetery at a later date.
