Chadwick Cummings Arms
1929 - 2018
HALLOWELL - Chadwick Cummings Arms, 89, of Hallowell and formerly of Vassalboro, died Sunday Sept. 2, 2018 in Augusta.
He was born April 19, 1929 in Burlington, Vt., the son of Willard and Florence (Cummings) Arms. He was raised on a dairy farm in Burlington, now the sight of Burlington High School. He graduated from the University of Vermont with both bachelor's and master's degrees in Dairy Production and completed a sabbatical study in Milking Systems from Penn State University. In his 40-year Cooperative Extension Service career, Chad served in New York, Vermont and Maine, retiring in 1998 as the University of Maine Extension Dairy Specialist. During his career, Chad was instrumental in getting organic milk production started in Maine. He also helped initiate the Maine Farm Days, which continue today.
Chad had been involved with barbershopping as a baritone for the Kennebec Valley Chordsmen for over 20 years. He also served a number of years as a counselor to other barbershop singing chapters and in 2006 was given the Barbershop Harmony Society Chapter, Counselor of the Year award for the Northeast District. The Rotary Club of Augusta was also the beneficiary of his talents where he served for several years on the board of directors and was awarded a Paul Harris Fellowship in 2011. He was also a longterm member of the Lions Club, enjoying 17 years of perfect attendance. He had also been active on committees and boards for the town of Vassalboro, the Oak Grove School Parents Association and for South Parish Congregational Church. Chad and his wife, Barbara, were leaders of a 26 member 4-H Club, the Riverside 4-H All Stars in Vassalboro. He was an active gardener known for his large raspberry patch. He and Barbara were married 59 years.
He was predeceased by his brothers, Robert, Willard and David Arms.
Chad is survived by his wife, Barbara; his children, Todd Arms and his wife, Marcy, of Ashland, Mass., John Chadwick Arms and his wife, Denise, of Mechanicsburg, Pa., and Nancy Arms, of Newton, Mass.; and his pride and joy, his grandchildren, Jason Chadwick Arms, Benjamin Sutton Arms, and Trevor Arms.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday Sept. 8, 2018 at the South Parish Congregational Church.
