Obituary

FARMINGTON - Barbara Ann King Doughty, 78, passed away on Dec. 22, 2018, at Franklin Memorial Hospital in Farmington, after a courageous battle with cancer. She did not give in and fought cancer to the end. In the final days, she was surrounded by her family and hospital nursing staff. Barbara was born on Dec. 8, 1940, in Bristol, Conn., to Louis and Dora King. The family moved to East Millinocket when Barbara was a baby. Her father was the head of maintenance for Great Northern Paper Company at the East Millinocket facilities. Barbara was a graduate from Schenck High School in 1959. Then she went on to earn a bachelor's degree from the University of Maine in 1962, followed by a master's degree in 1990. Barbara was married to Dale Doughty of North Yarmouth on June 15, 1962, at the East Millinocket Church. She drove daily from Lincoln to Orono to finish her degree, the academic year following their marriage. The marriage lasted 56 years, until her death. Barbara was a dedicated educator. She taught kindergarten, first and second grade in Lincoln, Mattawamkeag, Trenton, and Mount Vernon. She retired as a supervising principal of Mount Vernon Elementary School in 1997. Barbara was very proud of her students, who she continued to follow on Facebook. Barbara loved the out-of-doors, spending time at her family's cottage on South Twin Lake, snowmobiling, and other outdoor activities. She especially loved her ocean-side cottage at Gouldsboro Point that was built and maintained by the hands of herself, husband, children, and their spouses. She had special affection for her dogs, and feeding and watching the birds.

Barbara was very proud of her family and the achievements of her three children and their spouses and her grandchildren; oldest son, Dale Doughty and wife, Pamela, of Pittston; son, Dana Doughty and wife, Daphne, of Dixfield; daughter, Kathleen Cypher and husband, Larry, of Farmington. She will be sorely missed by the entire family, especially her husband, Dale Doughty, of Farmington.

She was predeceased by her mother and father; her brother, Robert King; as well as her grandson, Coleman F. Luce.

Barbara's family wishes to acknowledge the wonderful support, dedication, and friendship demonstrated by the nursing and CNA staff at Franklin Memorial Hospital. They were outstanding and truly professionals.

Barbara asked that the family hold a small and private service. Barbara enjoyed her experiences in the out-of-doors, her books, and time to herself. She knows that others have similar interests and would rather have people doing what they enjoy rather than attending a funeral.

Arrangements are under the care and direction of Dan and Scott's Cremation and Funeral Service, 488 Farmington Falls Road, Farmington, Maine.

The family asks, as per her request, those who would like to honor her life and passing, to make a gift in her memory to:
