1942 - 2018
WINTHROP- Arthur E. Hawes, 76, formerly of Winthrop, died Saturday, June 9, 2018 at Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston.
He was born in Portland June 7, 1942, the son of Arthur B. And Fern (Doe) Hawes.
He married Margaret R. Meader on Sept. 28, 1963, and they stayed married all these years because he knew the two important words for every marriage, "Yes, dear."
Arthur worked in several local mills, including The Cotton Mill in Hallowell and Carleton Woolen Mill in Winthrop. He was known around the area as "The hubcap man" in Winthrop for over 45 years. He made clocks out of hubcaps, as well as helping people find replacements for the ones they lost.
He loved to sell farm-fresh eggs to his friends, and everyone was his friend. He loved to talk to everyone, and if you didn't speak, he spoke to you and wished you a good day. He was also a member of the Winthrop Masonic Lodge and was a 32nd-degree mason.
His family wishes to thank the Dialysis Center in Augusta and the staff at Central Maine Medical Center for the wonderful and compassionate way they cared for Arthur and their family.
He was predeceased by his parents; and a brother, William Hawes.
Arthur is survived by his wife of 54 years, Margaret Hawes; his children, Arthur L. "Larry" Hawes and his wife, Rhonda, of Winthrop, and Mitzi R. Brown, of Chelsea; his adopted daughter, Anna Golden; his brothers, Glen Hawes of North Monmouth and Richard Hawes of Vassalboro; his sister, Joanne Jones of Vassalboro; his grandchildren, Rosanna Brown of Belgrade, Scott Brown Jr. of Chelsea, Curtis and Coty Hawes; a great-grandson, Blake Hussey, and many nieces and nephews.
Arthur's life will be celebrated in a gathering of remembrance on Saturday, June 16 from 2-5 p.m. at the Alfred W. Maxwell Jr. American Legion Post #40 on Bowdoin Street in Winthrop. A graveside committal service will be at 2 p.m. on Sunday, at Rome Village Cemetery on the Mercer Road in Rome.
