LITCHFIELD - Charles "Chuck" Dow Sr., 83, of Litchfield, formerly West Gardiner, passed away May 8, 2015 after a courageous and thankfully short battle with cancer at the Alfond Health Center in Augusta surrounded by his family. Chuck was born in Gardiner on August 15, 1931 the eldest son of Leland and Dorothy Brown Dow and has been a resident of West Gardiner and Litchfield most of his life. He graduated from Gardiner High School and Gates Business College. He proudly served his family, community and country serving in the Maine State legislature as a State Representative and Senator for 18 years and in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War. He was a Life Long Democrat. Chuck loved to be involved. He was a successful businessman who owned and operated a large State Farm Insurance agency for 34 years. After retirement he and his wife Nancy split time between their summer home on Woodbury Pond in Litchfield and winter home in Leesburg, Fla. He loved his family, travelling, the woods of the great State of Maine and golfing in Maine and Florida.
He is survived by his loving wife of 47 years Nancy A. Dow of Litchfield; his children Richard Dow and wife Nancy of Winthrop, Charles G Dow, Jr. and wife Theresa of Rochester, NY, Timothy McKenna of West Gardiner, Bethanie Dow and husband Duane Bachelor of Charlotte, NC, Michael McKenna of West Gardiner, Rickey McKenna and his wife Dina of Farmingdale, daughter-in-law Polly McKenna of West Gardiner; brother Gerald Dow of Manchester, sisters, Sylvia Fellows of West Gardiner and Linda Opp of Long Island, NY; numerous grandchildren; great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his son Stephen and daughter Stephanie; sisters Annette Jamison and Freda Markham and brother Leland Dwight Dow.
A memorial service and viewing will be held at the Staples Funeral Home in Gardiner, Maine. The viewing is from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. on Friday May 15th. The memorial service will take place at 2 p.m. Saturday May 16, 2015.
