WINTHROP - James Jerrol "Jerry" Vickerson Jr., 79, died peacefully on March 11, 2014, surrounded by his loving family.

Jerry was born in Winthrop, Mass., on April 21, 1934, the son of James and Dorothy (Donovan) Vickerson, and attended local schools.

After serving in the Army, he earned undergraduate and graduate degrees in education from the University of Massachusetts and also studied at the Harvard Graduate School of Education, focusing on mathematics. He was a teacher and administrator in several school districts in Massachusetts and Maine. He also worked for the Maine School Management Association, and served as deputy commissioner of education under the Longley administration. In 1981, he changed careers and founded Sports Field Inc.

In retirement, he enjoyed his homes in Florida and Sebago. He loved sports and was an avid golfer. Jerry was a man of high integrity, devoted to his family and a role model for those who had the privilege to know him.

Jerry was predeceased by his sister, Martha Hennigar, of Sebago.

He is survived by his beloved wife of 59 years, Dorothy (Duquette) Vickerson; his children, Suzanne McManus and husband James, of Yarmouth, James and wife Kristy, of North Monmouth, G. William and wife Tracy, of Winthrop, and Debra Millett and husband Kenneth, of Winthrop; his siblings, Thomas, of Albany, N.Y., and Ann Thornell, of Marco Island, Fla.; nine grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Relative and friends are invited to visit from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday, March 22 at Roberts Funeral Home and Cremation Service, 62 Bowdoin St., Winthrop, where a celebration of Jerry's life will follow the visitation at noon. A private family burial will be held this summer at Lakeside Cemetery in Sebago.
