AUGUSTA -- Sylvia Jeanne Sherman, 75, passed away unexpectedly on May 6, 2013, at her home.

She was born in Augusta on Jan. 1, 1938, the daughter of William H. and Bernadette (Cote) Sherman. Sylvia attended local schools and graduated from Cony High. She also attended and graduated from Radcliffe College in Cambridge, Mass. Afterward, she taught history at Winsor private school in Boston from 1963 to 1971.

Sylvia returned to Maine in the early 1970s to tend to her mother's health. She began her long career at the Maine State Archives then. During her time there, Sylvia worked diligently to arrange and make available Maine government records involving the Civil War, a subject for which she had always maintained a passionate interest and commitment to scholarship. She became known as an expert on the subject, consulting with those who were writing books and making movies. She especially enjoyed several trips to the Gettysburg National Park with friends she worked with at the archives. Even in retirement, she returned to the archives to write stories celebrating the sesquicentennial of the Civil War.

She was predeceased by her brother, William "Billy" Sherman; her dog, "Marigold;" and her cat, "Gunga Din."

Sylvia is survived by her nephew and nieces, Dale Sherman, Lisa Sherman, Holly Cummings and Tammy Jeannotte.

A graveside celebration of her life will be at 11:45 a.m. Tuesday, May 21, 2013, at Forest Grove Cemetery, off Green Street in Augusta.
