WHITEFIELD -- Edwin J. Mooney, 90, passed away peacefully on Saturday, April 28, 2012, at MaineGeneral Medical Center in Augusta with his family by his side.

He was born in Whitefield on Sept. 30, 1921, the son of Edward C. and Elizabeth (Skehan) Mooney. He was a lifelong member of St. Denis Church and the Knights of Columbus. He attended schools in Whitefield and was in the Gardiner High School Class of 1939.

During World War II he served in the Army Air Force. Following his military service, he was employed at the Veterans Administration Center in Togus for 30 years and was a gentleman farmer on the old homestead in Whitefield.

He was predeceased by his parents; infant son Mark; in 1981 by his wife Margaret (Colby) Mooney; also by his sisters, Frances Hickey, Gertrude Hickey and Marie Hickey, all of Whitefield, and Irene Martin of Connecticut; and brother Joseph A. Mooney of New Hampshire.

He is survived by his children and their spouses and children, JoAnn Mooney, Edwin C. and Colette Mooney, son Mathew and his wife, Rachel, daughter Jennifer and her husband, Toby Hawk, Michael J. and Daryl Mooney, their son Cameron and his wife, Katie, daughters Shannon and her husband, Mike Wickman, and Paige, Christine and Tom Colpitt and daughters Kelly and her husband, Brian Bannen, Erin and her husband, Brock Bessey, Joseph N. Mooney and partner Dominic Mercadante; four great-grandsons, Andrick and Weylin Mooney, Oliver Hawk and Daniel Mooney; and many beloved nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Relatives and friends may visit Staples Funeral Home, 53 Brunswick Ave., Gardiner on Wednesday, May 2, from 5 to 8 p.m.

A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated Thursday, May 3, at St. Denis Catholic Church, Whitefield, at 10 a.m. Burial will follow at Calvary Cemetery in the family lot.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his memory to the Bread of Life Kitchen 157 Water Street, Augusta or to MaineGeneral Health; envelopes will be available at the funeral home.
