FARMINGDALE - William Henry Magnus, known as Bill to his friends, passed away Monday, April 14. He lived at the Captain Lewis Residence in Farmingdale.
Bill was born June 10, 1947, to Elizabeth M, Coro Magnus and Bertram P. Magnus in Patterson, N.J. He attended P.S. 15 in Patterson. In 1960 the Magnus family moved to Secaucus, N.J. Bill attended Weehawken High School from which he graduated in 1966.
In 1966 Bill enlisted in the Navy. After boot camp in the Great Lakes he was assigned duty as a supplyman on the USS Forrestal aircraft carrier. He was aboard the Forrestal on July 20, 1967, when the carrier suffered a fire causing the deaths of 134 servicemen. He also served on the USS Kitty Hawk and the USS John F. Kennedy.
Bill spent 14 years in the Navy having been stationed in San Diego, Guam, Diego Garcia and Rhoda Spain. He was honorably discharged from service in 1980 after which he took up residence in Augusta.
Bill was an avid map reader and loved to travel. He leaves behind three sisters and two brothers, Bert Magnus, of Houlton, Elizabeth Bushong, of Calverton, N.Y, Margorie Magnus, of Bangor, Carl Magnus, of Park City, Utah, and Arleen West, of Hampton Bays, N.Y.; in addition to seven nieces and nephews and numerous other relatives.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday, April 18, at Staples Funeral Home, 53 Brunswick Ave., in Gardiner. A time of visiting will be before the service from 10 to 11 am.
Burial with military honors will be at 10 a.m. Friday, April 25, in the chapel at the new Maine Veterans' Memorial Cemetery, Mount Vernon Road, Augusta.
