NORTH BELGRADE / STOCKTON SPRINGS -- William "Bill" Pomeroy, 92. went to be with his Lord and Savior Feb.16, 2013, with his family at his side.

Bill was born in Stockton Springs on July 27, 1920, the son of Eugene and Myrtle (Harriman) Pomeroy. Bill grew up and lived for years on Cape Jellison in Stockton Springs, where he was an avid outdoorsman, enjoying hunting, fishing and lobstering. He served in the US Army during World War II. During that time he was stationed in Huntsville, Texas. It was there that he was an MP and cook at the German P.O.W. camp.

Bill worked at many different trades until settling into a 29-year career at St. Regis/Champion Paper Company. He was a great provider for his family, sometimes working two or three jobs. Bill was a stone cutter and cut the first cornerstone for Colby College.

On Jan. 10, 1977, he married the love of his life, Leola Drake, and together they enjoyed retirement, traveling to Nova Scotia many times and wintering in St. Petersburg, Fla. for 22 years. After Leola's death, Bill lived at home alone in North Belgrade until his recent hospitalization. He enjoyed cooking, playing cards and reminiscing with family and friends about days gone by.

Bill was a faithful deacon of the North Belgrade Baptist Church. Bill was particularly proud that during 2012 he had read his Bible in its entirety. He enjoyed singing hymns and Christian fellowship. He was a member of the Pownel Lodge of Masons in Stockton Springs and a member of the Anna Shrine of Bangor.

Bill was associated with the Oakland Senior Citizens where he immensely enjoyed being an adoptive grandparent to two special youngsters.

Besides his parents and wife, Bill was predeceased by 3 brothers; a stepson, John Tracy Sr.; grandchildren Shawna Jean and Terri-Lynn Gilbert, JohnTracy Jr. and Emery Barrows.

Bill is survived by his children, Eugene Pomeroy (Betty), of Howland, Sharon Blais (Denis), of East Greenbush, NY, and Patricia Gilbert (Kenny), of Orrington, stepdaughters Jeanette Grevois (Gerald) and Gloria Gilbert (Bob), of North Belgrade; a brother, Joseph Pomeroy, of Stockton Springs; a sister, Shirley Robbins, of Stockton Springs; 20 grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren and great great grandchildren

The family would like to extend a special thank you to Dr. Rosalind Waldron and the staff in the CCU at Maine General at Thayer.

Friends are invited to visit from 1 to 3 and 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Wheeler Funeral Home, 26 Church Street, Oakland. A celebration of Bill's life will be held at 11 am on Thursday at the North Belgrade Baptist Church, Route 1, Belgrade; fellowship will follow at the North Belgrade Community Center on Route 8, immediately following. Burial will be at Pine Grove Cemetery in Belgrade in the spring.
