SKOWHEGAN -- Sybil Jane Gilbert, 92, died Friday, Nov. 30, 2012, at Cedar Ridge Center for Health Care and Rehabilitation. She was born on Nov. 22, 1919, in Portland, the daughter of Dr. George O. Sr. and Sybil M. (Kemp) Cummings.

She attended Colby Junior College (now Colby-Sawyer), Boston University School of Music, and for a few years nursing school in Boston. On Sept. 12, 1948, she married Benjamin M. Gilbert. In the 1960s, Sybil attended Farmington State Teachers College (now the University of Maine Farmington), where she earned her teaching certificate, and then taught at different schools for a few years.

Sybil was active in community organizations, was leader of the Happy Day 4-H Club for several years, and for a brief time was a Girl Scout leader.

She liked animals and was especially fond of her pet dogs and cats.

She is survived by her daughter, Ann S. Gilbert of Skowhegan, and was predeceased by two younger brothers, Dr. George O. Cummings Jr. and Willis Cummings.

At Sybil's request there will be no funeral or visitation hours.

In lieu of flowers, friends may make donations in her memory to a .
