Sally L. (Gartman) Cumming
1933 - 2017
WEST GARDINER - Sally Cumming, 83, of West Gardiner, died peacefully at home on May 6, 2017, with her loving family at her side. Born May 20, 1933, in Detroit, Mich., she grew up in Highland Park and went on to graduate with bachelor's and master's degrees in Art Education and Art Philosophy from Wayne State University in Detroit.
Sally taught Art and English for several years in Detroit Public schools. Her twin daughters Barbara and Nancy were the joy of her life, and became her two best friends. After retirement, Sally and her husband moved to Maine to be closer to her daughters and to son-in-law, Drew, whom she also adored.
Sally was an accomplished fiber artist: she taught design for many years with the Council of American Embroiderers, and her work was exhibited internationally, including at the Au Fil du Temp in 1994.
Her love and talent for art was one of the things that made her such a wonderful grandmother to her grandchildren, Emma and Doug. She treasured her time with them and they spent many hours on a variety of imaginative and sometimes outrageous craft projects. Sally was an avid reader and made it a habit to stop at the Gardiner Public Library every week to stock up on more books. Her principal pastime was watching the many wild birds out her back window. She made detailed daily records of every bird she saw for the past 20 years.
She was predeceased by her husband of 57 years, Jim Cumming; her parents Glenn and Charity Gartman; and by her eldest sister Barbara Bailey. She is survived by her daughter Nan Cumming and son-in-law Drew Masterman of Portland, daughter Barbara Cumming and her grandson Doug of Augusta, and granddaughter Emma and Emma's husband Graham Hegeman of Houston, Texas
The family wishes to express their gratitude for the loving care provided to Sally by MaineGeneral Hospice, with special thanks to Molly and Shannon for their devotion and understanding.
Private services will be held.
