WINTHROP - Ruth Agnes Crovo, 91, passed peacefully on Feb. 6, 2017, at MaineGeneral Rehab & Nursing Care, Glenridge Drive, Augusta.
Ruth was the fourth of ten children born to her parents, Reginald and Lillian Richards, in Monmouth, on April 19, 1925.
Ruth enjoyed her childhood and often reflected back on the many happy memories of growing up in a large family living on a farm in Monmouth and Winthrop. Upon graduating from Winthrop High School, Ruth went to nursing school at Central Maine General Hospital in Lewiston where she became a registered nurse. An adventurer at heart, Ruth went off to southern California with some friends where she met a young marine, Eugene Crovo, who became her husband for 62 years. With the birth of her children, Ruth gave up nursing to devote all of her time to raising her children. Ruth was an amazingly compassionate person for all living things. She loved having dogs and cats in her home and enjoyed feeding birds and squirrels in her yard. She was a strongly passionate individual who often advocated for what she believed in and encouraged her children to do the same.
Beyond her love of family, Ruth loved art, poetry and music. She would often be singing, reciting poetry, or listening to classical music. Ruth was a talented artist who enjoyed painting with water colors. Her talents were abundant and she was an excellent cook and seamstress, who also loved knitting and crocheting. In her later years, with her children grown, Ruth and Eugene spent time traveling across the country, working on art projects together and enjoying time with their children and grandchildren. One special art project led to the Hundred Acre woods in the back of their home where they brought Winnie the Pooh and all the characters to life. Holidays and going to camp were special times she enjoyed with Eugene, her children and grandchildren.
Ruth was predeceased by her husband, Eugene Crovo; her parents, Reginald and Lillian Richards; her sisters Louise Fields, Rhona Pettengill, Edith Libby, her two brothers Reginald Jr. "Buddy" Richards, Bill Richards; and her grandson, Matthew Austin Cole.
She is survived by her daughter Christina Cole and her husband, William, of Winthrop, her daughter Cathleen Crovo of Germantown, Md., her son Christopher Crovo and his wife, Nicole, of Scarborough and her son Peter Crovo and his wife Susan, of Houlton. Ruth loved her grandchildren and enjoyed watching them grow and hearing about their accomplishments in their young lives. Her grandchildren only knew Ruth as "Mam" and loved how she made every holiday a special celebration with decorations, cakes or whoopie pies. Ruth's grandchildren include: Noah Cole of Portland, Elyse Cole and her fiancé, Mathew Edwards, of Salem Mass., Corinne Crovo and her life partner, Josh Drew, of Augusta, Emma Crovo and Sophia Crovo of Scarborough. Ruth is also survived by four sisters, Carol French of South Paris, Doris Seger of Milford, Betty White of Winthrop, and Nancy Grant of Orono; along with many nieces and nephews.
The family would like to thank the many friends and family who have helped with the support and care of Ruth in her later years of her wonderful life. With special thanks to our neighbor and good friend, Joan Frake, of Winthrop.
Ruth's life will be celebrated in a memorial mass of Christian burial at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church, Winthrop, at a date and time to be announced in the spring.
