RANDOLPH -- Ruth C. Zervas, 98, of Randolph passed away peacefully on Aug. 12, 2011.

She was born in Blue Hill, Maine, and lived in several areas throughout Maine. She was a graduate of Gardiner High School, where her father was superintendent of schools. She earned a degree from Bates College and was elected a member of the Bates College Key Club.

For more than 25 years she was the alumni class secretary of her graduating class. She also attended the Modern School of Applied Art in Boston, studying clothing design, copy writing and related subjects. She taught at the former Stevens School in Hallowell and at Long Lang School in Middletown, Conn. She lived in Hartford, Conn., for many years, returning to Maine with her children after the death of her husband.

After relocating to Maine, she worked for the Maine Department of Human Services with an emphasis in finding foster homes for children who were in state custody. She was a very caring and giving person. She was a member of the Samuel Grant Chapter, DAR, holding several positions including registrar and the office of regent.

She was a member of the Highland Avenue United Methodist Church of Gardiner, the Arnold Expedition Society, the Augusta Nature Club, Cecelia Club and a member of the Children of Hawaiian Missionaries Society. Her direct ancestors were part of the pioneer missionary group to Hawaii.

She enjoyed traveling, especially her trip to Hawaii where she was able to visit the ancestral home which is now part of the Mission Houses Museum. She also enjoyed spending summers with her family at the family home in Blue Hill. Her hobbies were sewing and clothing design, painting, playing bridge, and she was well known for being an avid reader.

She was predeceased by her husband, Carter Zervas, and her son. She is survived by her daughter, Cynthia Brown and her husband, Charles, her daughter-in-law, Rachel Zervas and her grandchildren, Jessica Brown and Claudia Zervas and various other relatives.

A private burial will be in the family lot in Oak Grove Cemetery in Gardiner. Anyone wishing to make a contribution in her memory may consider The Highland Avenue Methodist Church of Gardiner or the Gardiner Public Library, 152 Water St., Gardiner. The family would like to thank the staff of Green Gardens at the MaineGeneral Rehabilitation and Nursing Care at Glenridge in Augusta for their kindness and professionalism during Ruth's stay.
