Robert J. Brooks
1928 - 2017
AUGUSTA - Robert J. Brooks, 89, died July 8, 2017, at the Veterans Hospital in Togus.
Mr. Brooks was born in Mars Hill, on Feb. 9, 1928, the son of Ralph D. and Laura Luce Brooks.
He was raised in Portland and attended Portland schools. At the age of 16, Brooks enlisted in the U.S. Navy in November 1944 and was discharged in August 1946, after serving at the Pearl Harbor Navy Yard. After a brief insurance career, he entered the automobile business in 1954. He was used car manager at the Henley Kimball Co. until 1969. Also during this time, he fulfilled a lifelong dream to own a restaurant, which he accomplished by purchasing the Harbor Lunch on Commercial Street in Portland. In 1970 he moved to Winthrop, at which time he became manager of Coe Chevrolet in Augusta. In 1972 he purchased Clark Buick Co. in Augusta and added the Volkswagen franchise later. In 1990, that agency became Capitol Car Care and Brooks Boys Auto Sales, which he operated with his three sons, Steve, John and Dan, until his death.
Golf was Bob's passion and he enjoyed playing both in Portland and as a member of the Augusta Country Club. Bob was also an avid card player, whether it be with the Tuesday night bridge group he hosted or gin rummy with his lifelong Portland friends.
When his children were young, Bob coached their baseball teams and as of late, he especially enjoyed watching his grandchildren's sporting events, rarely missing a game.
He was predeceased by his parents; his wife and good friend Elizabeth Brooks, of Winthrop; two brothers, Ralph D. of Tucson, Ariz.; and Franklin L., of Portland; oldest son, Robert J. Brooks Jr., of Hollis; daughter-in-law Darlene Brooks, of Manchester; and grandson Tade A. Brooks, of Augusta.
He is survived by his two sisters, Mary E. (Tissie), of Tucson Ariz.; Dorothy B., of Cumberland; a brother, Edward C. and his wife Rose Marie (Dolly), of Portland; and three sons, Steven A., of Augusta; John D., of Manchester; and Daniel S., of Winthrop. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews, eight grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
