Raymond Richard
1934 - 2016
WATERVILLE - Raymond Richard, 81, passed away from cancer on Jan. 9, 2016, at his home in Waterville. Ray was born on Dec. 7, 1934, to Donaldo and Blanche Lozier Richard in Berlin, N.H. He attended the University of Maine at Orono where he earned his masters degree in education.
Ray taught and coached at Winslow High School for a number of years and then was asked to be the founding executive director of the Kennebec Valley Community Action Program (KVCAP). As executive director, Ray oversaw programs such as Head Start, transportation, housing, family planning, and more.
Under Ray's leadership the agency grew from modest beginnings into an agency that provided help to people not only in Waterville but in the surrounding communities of Augusta, and Skowhegan. Ray loved the work he did at KVCAP and cherished the many successes they had, in bringing assistance to the people of need in the local communities, with their many innovative and cutting edge programs.
Ray was predeceased by his wife of 53 years, Jane Behringer Richard. He is survived by their four children and their spouses, Sue and Mike Leighton, John Richard, Jim and Lela Richard, and David and Angela Richard. He is also survived by nine grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Ray's family invites friends to join them in a celebration of his life at Eric's Restaurant in Waterville on Saturday, Jan. 30, from 4-6 p.m.. Arrangements are under the care of Gallant Funeral Home, 10 Elm St., Waterville.
