Linda J. Nelson
1949 - 2017
WINTHROP - Linda J. Nelson, 68, of Winthrop, died Saturday, August 5, 2017, at Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor, after an unexpected medical event.
Linda was born July 16, 1949, in Bangor, the daughter of Bob (Charles) R. and Beatrice (Pelletier) Hashey.
She grew up in Old Town and graduated from Old Town High School in 1967. Much of her childhood was also spent on Schoodic Lake learning to fish and boat and be a capable Mainer. Her adult life started in Gardiner, where she made so many lifelong friendships. Louise and Conrad Bernier lived across the street and the girls grew up together. When she became a single mom, her selflessness was incredible and she did everything to provide a wonderful life for her daughters.
In 1984, Linda was introduced to the love of her life, Jim Nelson, by dear and lifelong friends, Art and Cathy Warren, and they were married at home in Winthrop where they built their life together. Meeting and creating a life with Jim was another blessing and she was able to develop her leadership and work skills. Linda was the librarian and much more at the Winthrop Middle School for over 30 years, making a difference in many lives with her kindness, leadership, organization and love for life. Flexibility and willingness to learn allowed Linda to be computer tech support. She even got her daughter using Snapchat. She left a mark on those who knew her and they remember her laugh, smile and generosity.
Linda and Jim had a full life and enjoyed their time with grandchildren, traveling, friends, casinos and camp. After Jim's death in 2010, Linda focused on her grandchildren and spent many fun hours with her "WMS family" (especially Katie and Amanda). She was always on the go and rarely sat still. She could work circles around most anyone up to her last days.
She will be deeply missed by son, Jeff Nelson, and wife Leslie, and their children, Cooper and Avery; daughters, Julie Prowe and husband Derek, and their children Cassie and Mira; Lisa Ford and husband Chris, and their children, Robert, Mason, Hunter and Ilyssa; and Kim Nelson Genest, and her daughter, Jada; brother Richard Hashey; and many extended family and friends.
Relatives and friends may visit Saturday, Aug. 12, 2017, from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. at Roberts Funeral Home, 62 Bowdoin St., Winthrop. A reception to continue the celebration of Linda's life will follow visiting hours, at Peppers Restaurant, Main Street, Winthrop at 1 p.m. Burial will be at a later date in Chadwick Hill Cemetery, South China.
