AUGUSTA - Joyce Marie Luce, a longtime resident of the Augusta area, died March 12, 2017, at MaineGeneral Medical Center.
Born April 26, 1940, in Washington, D.C., during the waning of the Depression and the emergence of the U.S. as a world power, Joyce would grow up with tenacity, a steadfast strength of purpose, determination, and at times stubbornness that would see her through those lean years. Joyce would endear herself to many she met for the feisty spirit that never left, right up to her passing. As you would expect Joyce to say, with a pointed finger, "Not ever gone, just moved on."
Joyce worked multiple jobs while raising a family. She was later employed until her retirement for the State of Maine D.O.T. in their print shop.
Joyce considered herself patriotic and proud of her family history in the Revolutionary and Civil Wars. She loved tennis, horseback riding, antiques, and time spent with her group at the Cohen Community Center. Any steamed lobster was fair game to butter and a fork. Joyce never lost her love of old movies, from an era that made sense. She was an avid reader of U.S. history and stories of the pioneers. She loved animals, especially horses and dogs. Flowers and watching wild birds made her smile.
Joyce volunteered her time for the Women's Domestic Violence Project and Sexual Assault hot line. She also held a soft spot for children, donating continually to
Joyce was predeceased by her parents, Albert and June Mitchler. Joyce leaves behind her children, Michael Luce and his significant other, Norma Welsh, daughters Patsy and Jody Luce; a brother, Albert Mitchler, a sister, June McComis; her very special "Boy" Simon, and her special friend of 36 years Sharon Maxim. "The hardest thing to do is let go. The most compassionate thing you will ever do is let go. Rest a peaceful rest, until I see you again, Friend."
At Joyce's request, there will be no viewing. A graveside service will be held this spring at Kling Cemetery, West River Road, Augusta.
