JOYCE LOUISE FESSENDEN
1931 - 2017
WINTHROP - Joyce Louise Fessenden, 85, died Sunday, May 14, 2017, at Heritage Rehabilitation & Living Center in Winthrop. She was born August 13, 1931, in Belfast to Wilbur and Alice (Wardwell) Rice.
She was raised in Gardiner and Augusta and graduated from Cony High School, where she was an enthusiastic participant in musical activities, especially Chizzle Wizzle. She married her high school sweetheart, fellow Cony alumnus John Fessenden, following his graduation from Dartmouth College in 1952. They settled in the Washington, DC area where they raised three children.
Following John's untimely death, Joyce returned to her roots and community and retired from the State of Maine in 1991. After retirement, she had more time to pursue her love for music. She enjoyed sharing her passion with many local groups who cared for the elderly, and it made her eyes shine to see someone enjoying and singing along with her familiar old tunes.
Joyce continued to follow the Washington Redskins for years after returning home to Maine. She kept in touch with many old friends and thoroughly enjoyed the serendipitous occasions on which she discovered a connection with someone from her past history in Augusta.
Joyce's beloved stepfather, George Henry Peters, passed away in 1976, followed by her husband in 1982 and her mother in 1987.
She is survived by her three children, Joy Macnichol (Charles) of Mooresville, N.C., Judy Loren (Lars) of Cumberland and John Fessenden (Laila) of Austin, Texas. She had five grandchildren; and a great-grandchild due soon.
A celebration of Joyce's life will be at 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, May 17, at Roberts Funeral Home, 62 Bowdoin St., Winthrop, with Rev. Ned Crockett officiating. Joyce's family will receive friends from 1:00- 2:00 p.m. prior to the service.
