Jean B. Nevins
1933 - 2017
AUGUSTA - Jean B. Nevins, 83, passed away on Friday, April 14, 2017, at Glenridge in Augusta where she had been a patient since May, 2016. She was born July 17, 1933, in Augusta, the daughter of Howard B. and Martha Potter Kaler.
Jean attended Augusta Schools, graduated from Cony High School and also attended Gates Business School in Augusta. She worked as an operator for New England Telephone Co. and later for the State of Maine for a number of years as a Committee Assistant at the Maine Legislature. She lived in Manchester for over 50 years, was a breast cancer survivor; had a great sense of humor, loved to laugh and especially appreciated the art of sarcasm. Jean enjoyed gardening and was a member of the Rose Society; always looked forward to trips to the Maine coast and summertime cookouts with her family. She enjoyed cooking, particularly baking due in part to her huge sweet tooth; doll collecting and knitting beautiful sweaters for her granddaughters.
Jean is survived by her husband of 63 years, James (Jim) Nevins of Manchester; son Jeff Nevins and wife Barbara of Augusta, son Tim Nevins and wife Elizabeth of Manchester and son Todd Nevins of Portland; her two granddaughters Jessica (Nevins) Kurtzman and husband Josh of Chicago, Ill.; Alyssa (Nevins) Benedict and husband Adam of Hallowell; her four great-grandchildren, Claire and Margot Kurtzman and Connor and Grant Benedict; her brothers Terry Kaler, of Honolulu, Hawaii and Richard Kaler; and several nieces and nephews. She is predeceased by her mother, father and brother, Tim Kaler; and her favorite aunt Alberta (Potter) Sherman.
The family would like to send a special thank you to the staff at Glenridge for their support and care of Jean during the past year.
At Jean's request, there will be no visiting hours. A private memorial service will be held later in the spring.
Arrangements are in the care of Roberts Funeral Home and Cremation Service, 62 Bowdoin St., Winthrop. Memories, condolences, photos, and videos may be shared with the family on the obituary page of our website at
