James R. Cassidy
1933 - 2017
SMITHFILED - James R. Cassidy, 83, passed away on April 17, 2017, at Togus Springs Hospice in Augusta, with his family by his side. He is survived by his wife of nearly 32 years Judith (Swanson) Cassidy.
Jim was born in Lowell, Mass., on May 26, 1933, and was the son of the late Robert H. and Grace (Murphy) Cassidy. He grew up in Lowell, attended Morey School, graduated from Lowell Trade School in 1951, and served in the U.S. Navy from 1952-56 aboard the carriers USS Saipan CVC-48 and USS Tarawa CV-40 as Electrician Second Class. Over his career Jim worked as an electrician and air conditioner/refrigeration mechanic at Fort Devens, Cambridge Corporation, Alto Electronics, Bedford VA Hospital, and a number of other companies.
In 1955 he married the late Theresa (Pac) Cassidy and raised a family in Lowell, living in the Highlands section of the city. In 1985 he married Judy and moved to Bedford, Massachusetts. They both retired from the Bedford VA Hospital in 1993 and settled in Smithfield, Maine, where they had a home on North Pond.
As a boy, Jim was an outstanding athlete, an especially accomplished golfer. He was also a great dancer and he and his first wife, Terry, were regulars at the Hoodsie Hop Dances at the Immaculate Conception Church Hall where they met. His days in the Navy inspired his love of the ocean and he took up fishing in his later years, lobstering in Gloucester as hobby and catching bass on home waters in Maine. Over the years he and Judy shared many activities together: skiing, snow mobiling, camping, traveling to the Canadian Maritimes, and walking the roads and trails around their home. He especially loved entertaining his family on their visits to North Pond. Jim was always working on a home project and was always willing to lend a hand to neighbors in Smithfield.
In addition to his wife Judy, he is survived by his brother Robert Cassidy of Sarasota, Fla.; his daughters Brenda Cassidy of Braintree, Mass., Donna Cassidy and her husband Michael Lawrenson of Gorham, Johanna Cassidy of Lowell, and his son Michael Cassidy and his wife Marcia of Lowell; five grandchildren John Marcinuk, Jeffrey Marcinuk, Michael Cassidy Gallagher, Donna Jo (DJ) Cassidy, and Brennan Cassidy; and one great-granddaughter Genevieve Marcinuk. He is also survived by Judy's daughters Nancy Catino of Milford, N.H., Karen Dunleavy and her husband Matt Dunleavy of Billerica, Mass., Susan Lombardini and her husband Tass Lombadrini of Billerica, and Brenda Eunson and her husband Paul Kaplan of Tyngsboro, Mass.; six grandchildren Lisa Woodburne, Nick Lombardini, Taylor Dunleavy, Meagan Dunleavy, Andrea Rizzo and Anthony Catino; five great-grandchildren Diaval, Franklin, Allison, Raelynne, and Mary; and two great-great-grandchildren Sophia and Xander. Jim loved his two wonderful families and many great friends.
He was predeceased by his parents, many uncles and cousins; and his sister Mary Toomey of Vero Beach, Fla.
His family would like to extend their thanks for the wonderful care provided to Jim at the Togus VA Hospital, especially the nursing staff and physicians of 3 South, Building 200, and Togus Springs Hospice.
