Gabrielle L. Manson
1915 - 2018
WATERVILLE - Gabrielle L. Manson, formerly of Fairfield, Oakland and Unity, age 102, died peacefully Feb. 3, 2018, at Oak Grove Center, Waterville.
Gabrielle was born on Sept. 23, 1915, the eldest child of Godfroid "Andrew" and Mary (Flaherty) Dostie. She graduated from Lawrence High School in 1932, then worked in local textile mills until 1947. During World War II, Gabrielle was the first and last female weaver at the Wyandotte-Worsted mill in Waterville.
Gabrielle Dostie and Parrish "Bud" Manson were married March 29, 1947, and together they raised their family in Oakland until 1963 and then in Unity. While attending to the needs of her large family and household, Gabrielle was a Girl Scout leader and an active member and officer of the American Legion Auxiliary in Oakland. Upon her move to Unity, she attended the Unity Union Church and was a member and officer of the Methodist Women's Society.
As a young woman, she went to the movies weekly. You did not want to go up against her on movie trivia. She devoted her life to her husband and children. Gabrielle was devoutly religious. She was a wonderful cook and made the most delicious piecrust and fried chicken. Gabrielle was a lifelong avid reader, liked solving crossword puzzles, and was still taking long walks at the age of 90.
She will be lovingly remembered and missed.
She is survived by her children; Francis (Pete) Dostie and wife, Shirley, of Pickerington, Ohio; Donna Salisbury of Westminster, Md.; Parrish Manson and wife, Jessey, of Waterville; Mary Levine and husband, Robert, recently deceased, of Woburn, Mass.; Paul Manson and wife, Maureen, of South Portland; Marc Manson and wife, Gwen, of Burnham; and Pamela Manson of Winslow; 16 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased by her husband, Bud Manson; son, Michael Manson; and four siblings, Andrew Dostie, Elizabeth Martin, Lorraine Culpovich and Gloria Boyson.
Gabrielle's family wishes to thank all of the staff at Oak Grove Center, Cool Street, Waterville, for their superb care of their mother and grandmother.
A graveside service at the Lakeview Cemetery, Old Belgrade Avenue, Oakland, is planned for Saturday, May 26, at 11 a.m., with the Rev. Scott Jones officiating. A celebration of Gabrielle's life will be held immediately following, at the home of Marc and Gwen, 104 Mount Rd. in Burnham.
