Frances Evelyn Howe Smith

1919 - 2017

NORRIDGEWOCK - Frances Evelyn Howe Smith, 97, passed away Saturday, May 6, 2017, at her home of 68 years, in Norridgewock.

She was born Sept. 5, 1919, in Sherman, Maine, the fourth of six daughters in the family of Ernest and Ina Howe. She attended Canaan and Sherman schools and graduated from Windham High School Class of 1936.

During World War II, she made her contribution to the war effort working as a welder at Portland Ship Yard helping build Liberty Ships. After the war, she earned her RN from Memorial Hospital in Worcester, Mass.

Frances married her longtime sweetheart, Lyle Channing Smith, on Nov. 15, 1947, and the couple moved to Norridgewock in 1949 to begin their life as dairy farmers. She worked beside her husband on the farm and kept the home until 1973, when she returned to nursing as an operating room nurse at Thayer Hospital in Waterville.

After retirement, she and her husband enjoyed gardening, spending time at their camp lot on North Pond, and being snowbirds, driving their RV to Florida and later Harlingen, Texas, during the winter months.

Following her husband's death in 1988, she remained living on the home farm, helping her son in any way she could: running errands, driving tractor during haying season, and feeding calves daily.

Frances was predeceased by her husband Lyle, and her sisters Marjorie Nielson, Winifred (Peggy) Clark, Mildred Maye, and Maxine Eaton.

She is survived by her sister Hazel Magnusson, of Lawrence, Mass.; and her son Roger of Norridgewock.

A graveside service will be held Saturday, May 20, at 1 p.m. at the Williamson Cemetery on Childs Road in Norridgewock. Arrangements are under the care of Smart & Edwards Funeral Home, 183 Madison Ave., Skowhegan, Maine.
