Esther T. Downing
1924 - 2017
BELGRADE LAKES - Esther T. Downing, 93, died July 6, 2017, at Lakewood Continuing Care in Waterville.
She was born in Rome on Jan. 5, 1924, the daughter of Howard and Rebecca (Wentworth) Tracy. Esther graduated from Williams High School in Oakland.
A longtime resident of Belgrade Lakes, Esther was employed at the Belgrade Central School as head cook for over 25 years. She was an active member of the Union Church. Esther was past Worthy Matron of the Mount Vernon Chapter, Order of the Eastern Star.
Esther was a dedicated sports fan of her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren, always cheering their teams on with enthusiasm. It was important for her not to miss a game. She loved walking the beach, picking shells and rocks. Her family always came first. She was an avid Red Sox fan, enjoyed lawn sales with her sisters, and loved to play cards. She was predeceased by her husband, Fay; a sister, Anette Tracy Willey; and a brother, Delmar Tracy.
Surviving are a daughter, Gail Rizzo, and husband Frank, of Belgrade Lakes; two sons, Howard Downing and wife Sally, of Belgrade; and Myron Downing, of Greenville; a sister, Beverly Beal, of Industry; six grandchildren, Eric Rizzo and wife Laura, Jill McKenzie and husband Dan, Todd Rizzo, Wade Downing, Melissa Hafenecker and husband Olan, and Becky Carey; 12 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
To Vickie Dyer and her team at Moonlight Bay at Lakewood Continuing Care: We thank you all from the bottom of our hearts for giving our mother the respect, diginity and love that was given to her every day, and for all of the smiles, kindness and care that was given to her every day as well to all of us. God bless you all. -

Friends are invited to visit from 6-8 p.m. Monday, July 10, at Lawry Brothers-Wheeler Funeral Home, 26 Church St., Oakland. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Union Church Belgrade Lakes. A reception/luncheon will follow the service, at Friendship Hall at the Union Church.
