Donald Webber Ballard
1925 - 2015
AUGUSTA - Donald Webber Ballard Sr., 89, passed away on June 26, 2015, at the Togus V.A. Medical Center. Donald was born in Augusta on Sept. 4, 1925, to Harry Ballard and Abbie Webber of Augusta and is a direct descendent of 18th century midwife Martha Ballard.
Donald was drafted to serve his country during his senior year at Cony High School which caused him to miss his graduation in 1944. Donald served as a quartermaster third class in the US Navy during World War II from 1944-1946.
Following his service in the Navy, Donald attended the University of Maine at Orono where he graduated with a degree in Agriculture. He taught at Lee Academy, in Lee, from 1952 to 1967. Donald returned to the University of Maine where he earned a Master's degree in Guidance Counseling in 1966. He served as guidance counselor at Mattanawcook Academy in Lincoln, from 1968 to 1986. After retiring from Mattanawcook Academy, Donald worked part-time for the Waterville school system.
Throughout the years, Donald was involved in the community through organizations such as the Lions Club in Lincoln and the Cooperative Extension Service in Augusta. In recent years, he enjoyed the fellowship of the South Parish Congregational Church in Augusta. Donald was known for his compassion and his dedication to his students, his family, and his community.
Donald is survived by his wife of 67 years, Barbara Conant Ballard; his six children, Kathy Reay and her husband Walter of Windsor, Donald Ballard Jr. of Augusta, David Ballard and his wife Vicki of Hamden, Michael Ballard and his wife Karen of Williamsburg, Va., Scott Ballard and his wife Lisa of Fairfield, and Sharon Ballard and her husband Kevin Gross of Wilson, N.C.; 10 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.
Relatives and friends may visit at Knowlton and Hewins Funeral Home, One Church Street, Augusta, on Wednesday, July 1, 2015, from 11 a.m.-1 p.m., with a celebration of his life at 1 p.m. Burial will follow in the Coombs Cemetery.
