Carl George Arata
1934 - 2017
WINTHROP - Carl George Arata, 83, died peacefully at his home Aug. 5, 2017, after a long illness.
He was born on April 16, 1934, the son of John and Elizabeth (Violette) Arata. His stepmother, Avis Arata Millett, played a major role in his life.
Carl lived in Hallowell until moving to Winthrop, and graduated from Winthrop High School in 1953.
In 1958, he married Shirley Lord, of Gardiner and together they provided a fun, loving and supportive family unit and enjoyed camping, snowmobiling, boat riding, waterskiing and riding on Sundays to anywhere. His favorite place was Oceanview Campground at Popham Beach in Phippsburg.
Carl worked at Marston's Esso in Winthrop during high school; then bought his own garage in 1957, known as Arata's Texaco (aka Arata's hangout). He was a man of all trades: business owner, mechanic and wrecker service operator.
He served in the Maine National Guard as a specialist grade E-4, and was honorably discharged in August 1960.
He was a 25-year member of the Winthrop Fire Department, retiring with the rank of lieutenant.
He was predeceased by his sister, Violet Bernier; and brother, Ryan Arata.
He is survived by his wife, Shirley (Lord) Arata, of Winthrop; daughter, Kelly Arata, of Hallowell; son, David Arata, of Winthrop; granddaughter, Megan Arata, of Sidney; sister, Joyce Perry, of Gardiner; stepmother, Avis Arata Millett, of Ocala, Fla.; and many extended family and friends.
Visiting hours will be held Friday, Aug. 11, 2017, from 1-3 p.m. at Roberts Funeral Home and Cremation Service, 62 Bowdoin St., Winthrop. A graveside committal service will follow visiting hours at Glenside Cemetery, Turkey Lane, Winthrop.
