Bernard W. Shaw
1928 - 2017
LIMESTONE/BANGOR - Bernard W. Shaw, 88, passed away on Sept. 11, 2017. He was born Sept. 16, 1928, in Limestone, the son of Samuel and Blanche Shaw.
Bernard attended the Limestone schools and the University of Maine. He later married Norma Ward. He started farming with Norma's father, Herman Ward, before taking over the farm and farming until he moved to Augusta in 1987.
Bernard was very active in the communities where he lived. His focus was on youth programs, civic organizations, school positions, and serving his churches in many capacities. Over the years, he served on many agricultural committees at the local, state and national levels. He retired from farming when he was appointed as Commissioner of Agriculture for the State of Maine, serving two terms.
After retiring, Bernard and Norma also volunteered countless hours at the Augusta Food Bank and the Windsor Fair. It also allowed more time for his hobbies of camping, fishing, hunting and family time.
In addition to his parents, Bernard was predeceased by his brother Vaughn, and sisters Virginia and Marilyn. He is survived by his loving wife of 67 years, Norma; son Steve Shaw and his wife Carrie, daughters Susan Nile and her husband Carson, and Sara Hardy and her husband Mike; grandchildren Sam and his wife Ivy, Matthew, Emily, and Stephen; great-grandchildren Dylan and Devon; sister Ruth MacIlroy; and many nieces and nephews.
The family expresses their deepest appreciation to Grace, Donald and Marion Patten for bringing Bernard up when his parents died at an early age.
A memorial service will be held 11a.m. Saturday, Sept. 16, 2017, at St. Patrick's Episcopal Church, 21 Holyoke St. in Brewer. The family invites relatives and friends to share conversation and refreshments in the fellowship room immediately after the service.
A Masonic Service will be held 1 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 17, 2017, at Webster Cemetery, Ward Road in Limestone.
