WATERVILLE - Fred J. Newhard Jr. died on Feb. 18, 2014, after a brief illness. He was the son of Freddie and Eva Newhard, of Allentown, Pa. He was predeceased by his wife of 50 years, Jean M. Newhard, whom he met in high school.

Fred was a devoted husband, as well as father and grandfather to his family: Susan and her husband. Bob Seiler. of Dover, Mass., Jan and husband John Seeler, and children Jay and Anna, of Wellesley, Mass., Tim and wife Sandra and daughter Ali, of Needham, Mass., William and wife Linda, of Westford, Mass., and children Christopher, of Troy, N.Y., and Nora and her husband, Andrew Daigle, of Newton, Mass., and Doug Newhard and wife Edna McShane, of Trumbull, Conn. He is also survived by two sisters: Dorothy Papp, of Allentown, Pa., and Kathryn Schall, of Mechanicsburg, Pa.

Fred served in the Navy in World War II as a seaman first class. After his service, he graduated from Lehigh University with a degree in chemical engineering. He then began what would be a 37-year career with Scott Paper Co., the majority of which he worked at the Winslow plant, leaving as chief engineer.

He was a member of the First Congregational Church of Waterville, the Lions Club and the American Legion. In his retirement, he volunteered at the Evening Lunch Program, the United Way and Salvation Army. An avid golfer, Fred continued to play until last year. He loved Maine, Colby College sports teams, and the community in which he lived.

A memorial service will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, March 1 at the First Congregational Church, Eustis Parkway in Waterville.
