Walter H. Golden


RANDOLPH - Walter H. Golden, 89, died Wednesday, April 16, 2014, at Maine Medical Center, Portland, following a brief illness. He was born in Hallowell on Dec. 9, 1924, a son of the late Thomas A. and Amanda (Brunelle) Golden.

Mr. Golden was a graduate of Cony High School, class of 1943, and attended Gates Business School.

He was a World War II veteran, serving in the Army until 1946.

Mr. Golden was employed by the Maine Army National Guard for more than 35 years. He had also worked for several years at the VA hospital at Togus and the United States Property and Fiscal Office.

He was a communicant of St. Mary of the Assumption Catholic Church in Augusta and a member of the National Association of Retired Federal Employees; AARP; St. Mary's Men's Club; Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 9 in Gardiner; Fitzgerald-Cummings Post 2 American Legion; St. Mary's Credit Union, where he was a charter member and served on the board of directors; and the Augusta Babe Ruth board of directors.

Mr. Golden, along with his wife, enjoyed following the grandchildren playing baseball and softball from Little League to college. He always looked forward to his annual hunting trips with his friends. During his later years, he was a devoted caretaker to his wife, Elizabeth, who was severely disabled with multiple sclerosis.

Mr. Golden was predeceased by his wife, Elizabeth (McCarty) Golden; two brothers, Forest and Robert Golden; and two sisters, Jeannette Dumais and Mary Blackburn.

He is survived by his two sons, Gary Golden, and his wife, Terry, of Augusta, and Timothy Golden and his wife, Susan, of Barre, Vt.; his daughter, Jacklyn Botti, and her husband, Rob, of Largo, Fla.; three brothers, Thomas Golden, of Bridgton, Raymond Golden, of Delaware, and Paul Golden, of Augusta; a sister, Doris Miller, of Bangor; five grandchildren, Kevin Golden and his wife, Ana, Erica Golden, Jennifer Botti, Anthony Golden and Ryan Golden; as well as several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Relatives and friends may visit from 2 to 4 p.m. Tuesday, April 29, at Plummer Funeral Home, 16 Pleasant St., Augusta. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Wednesday, April 30, at St. Mary of the Assumption Catholic Church, Augusta. Burial with military honors will follow in the new Maine Veterans' Memorial Cemetery, Mount Vernon Road, Augusta.
