Richard V. Delaware


FAIRFIELD - Richard V. Delaware, 83, passed away, Dec. 31, 2013, surrounded by family and under the care of the Togus hospice unit after a battle with pulmonary fibrosis. He was born on Jan. 6, 1930, in Waterville, the son of Gilbert and Gertrude (St.Peter) Delaware.

He was educated in Waterville schools, graduating from Waterville High School in the class of 1949 where he played many sports, football being his favorite. He went on to coach P.A.L. Youth League and American Legion baseball.

Richard was a veteran who proudly served his country during the Korean War, from 1950 until he was honorably discharged in 1954. He was stationed at Jacksonville Naval Air Station in Florida, where he married the love of his life, Jeannine Poulin in 1951.

Richard was a communicant of Immaculate Heart of Mary and St. John's, and a lifetime member of the Waterville American Legion Post 5. He was employed by Keyes Fibre Co. for 31 years, retiring in 1992. For the last 13 years, he volunteered at Inland Hospital, which he loved. Richard coached and played softball for many years, and took up golfing with buddies, Ron LaVerdiere, Roy Scott and other friends at Pine Ridge. He enjoyed spending vacations at Old Orchard Beach with family and friends, loved Sugar Shack bus trips, and going to Florida to visit family and friends.

Richard loved with all his heart his seven children, 11 grandchildren, and seven great-grandchildren. He enjoyed watching his children and grandchildren participate in sports and all school activities.

Richard is survived by his wife of 63 years, Jeannine; five daughters, Linda Tracy, Donna Cyr and husband Larry, Cathy Delaware, Jeannie Poulin and husband Calvin, and Jennifer Luckern and husband Chris; two sons, Gary V. Delaware and wife Bev, and James G. Delaware and wife Donna; grandchildren Amber Mitchell and husband Kennie, Garrick and Jonathan Delaware, Ashley Vaughn and husband Matt, Toby Cyr and Tabby, Autumn and Ciera Poulin, Sam and Sarah Delaware, and Sophia and Caleb Luckern; sister Jean Houston; brother Wayne Delaware; and sister-in-law Ceclie Vigue; and his seven great-grandchildren.

Richard was predeceased by his parents; sisters Melva and Jane Delaware, and Juliette "Honey" Manson; his brother, Gilbert "Dud" Delaware; and nephews Dr. Craig Houston, Dennis Poulin and John Delaware; and many sisters- and brothers-in-law.

A Mass of Christian burial will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 11, 2014, at Sacred Heart Church in Waterville. Burial will be in the spring at the Maine Veterans' Memorial Cemetery in Augusta. At the family's request there will be no visitation hours.
