AMARILLO, Texas -- Raleigh "R.B." Williams Jr., 66, of Amarillo, died Sunday, July 28, 2013, in Augusta, Maine.

Services will be at 2 p.m., Friday, Aug. 2, 2013, in Polk Street United Methodist Church with the Rev. Kevin Deckard, associate pastor, officiating. Burial will be in Llano Cemetery. Military rites are by Altus Air Force Base. Arrangements are by Boxwell Brothers Funeral Directors, 2800 Paramount Blvd.

Raleigh was born Nov. 23, 1946, in Waterville, Maine, to Albertha and Raleigh Bradford Williams Sr. He honorably served in the Air Force from 1966 to 1969, which included a tour in the Vietnam War. Raleigh married the love of his life, Verlene Randall, on Oct. 2, 1975. He and Verlene had many beautiful adventures together, truly partners in life, raising a family and enjoying every day together, including his quality time with his special needs son, Jimmy, who adored his daddy. They had fun days at the lake, quiet family retreats to the mountains, and many memorable vacations to see his family in Maine.

Raleigh was always fixing things around the house and "piddlin" around his workshop. Everyone knows Raleigh LOVED to decorate their home for Christmas. He took pride in every bulb on every tree and the numerous yard decorations. Raleigh spent 44 years at Pioneer Natural Resources Fain Plant. Raleigh, "R.B." to those at work, had a passion for his fellow workers and his profession. "R.B." began his career reading meters and ending it as senior plant superintendent. While it is rare in this day and age for a person to stay at any job for 44 years, "R.B." would have readily worked another 44.

Raleigh was an amazing family man, world's best husband, father, and papa. His grandchildren were the apple of his eye. There wasn't anything Papa couldn't do. He was a true super hero to his family, an angel here on Earth, and now a precious angel in Heaven.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and a sister, Sharon Crowell.

Survivors include his wife of 37 years, Verlene Williams, of Amarillo; a son, Jimmy Sanders, of Amarillo; three daughters, Denise Rector, Cindy Cruz and husband Johnny, and Laurie Stockard and husband Dusty, all of Amarillo; three sisters, Cindy Leavitt and husband Glenn, and Carol Williams, all of Waterville, and Susan Works and husband, Skip of Fairfield, Maine; six granddaughters, Sarah Handing and husband Martin, of Canyon, and Morgan Rector, Katie Cruz, Lexi Cruz, Carly Stockard and Chloe Stockard, all of Amarillo; two grandsons, Jonathan Cruz and Brennan Stockard, both of Amarillo; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 7 tonight, Aug. 1, 2013, at the funeral home.
