Lionel Joseph "Ned" Betit


BINGHAM - Lionel J. Betit, 92, died Tuesday, Nov. 26, 2013 at his home in Bingham. He was born Oct. 24, 1921, in Mexico, the son of Cyprien and Elizabeth (Theriault) Betit.

Ned was educated in schools in Mexico and Augusta. He continued his education for two years studying electrical engineering in Boston.

He was an Army veteran of World War II.

Ned worked for 20 years at Westinghouse Electric in Augusta, owned and operated Ned's Market in Bingham for seven years, and also owned and operated the Western Auto store in Hartland for 15 years.

Ned was a member of the Stanley Beane Post 99 American Legion in Bingham, a member of the Bingham Senior Citizens and the Bingham Grange.

Ned enjoyed many years at his camp at Kingsbury Pond, was an avid Red Sox fan and will be remembered for his great sense of humor.

He was predeceased by his wife, Cecile (Libby) Betit; his wife, Alice (Smith) Betit; grandsons Jeremy Savage and David Dudley; a granddaughter, Cindy Grenier; his sisters, Bernadette Pomerleau, Julienne Coulombe and Lucy Cody; his brothers, Florian "Flip," Joseph "Led," Adjatore "Adjie" and Gabriel "Gubby."

He is survived by four children: Richard Grenier and his wife, Diane, of Winslow, Alice Sherburne and her husband, Skip, of Milford, Theresa Savage and her husband, George, of Sidney, and RaeJean Beane and her companion, Dick Pullen, of Moscow, his sister, Gertrude Virgin, of Augusta; 22 grandchildren; many great grandchildren; several great-great -grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.

The family would like to express a special thank-you to Ned's grandson John and his wife Debra for caring for Ned over the past few years.

Visiting hours will be from 2 to 4 p.m. Friday, Nov. 29 at Giberson Funeral Home, 18 River St., in Bingham.

A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 30 at Christ The King, St. Peters Church on Owens Street in Bingham, with the Rev. John Mazzei officiating.

Interment will be at a later date the Maine Veterans' Memorial Cemetery in Augusta.
