Elmo L. "Sonny" Clough III


WINTHROP - Elmo Lester "Sonny" Clough III, 68, died peacefully with family by his side early Wednesday morning, May 20, 2014, at Augusta Center for Health & Rehabilitation.

Sonny was born in Augusta on Feb. 19, 1946, the son of the late Elmo "Bud" Clough and Rose (Beaulieu) Clough.

Raised in Winthrop, Sonny graduated from Winthrop High School, class of 1964, before enlisting in the Navy. He served during the Vietnam War from Sept. 29, 1964, until, his honorable discharge from active duty on Nov. 12, 1968.

After his service to his country, Sonny took the necessary steps in becoming a master plumber and worked in his father's plumbing business in Winthrop. After working alongside his dad for a time, Sonny married and left the family business to concentrate on raising his family.

Sonny was a trained firefighter with the Winthrop Volunteer Fire Department and was a proud member of the American Legion Alfred W. Maxwell, Jr. Post 40 in Winthrop.

As a young man growing up, baseball was everything to Sonny. As an adult, his passion shifted to classic cars. He enjoyed collecting them and showing his classic cars at various car shows around Maine.

Sonny is survived by his daughters, Katie Perkins, and husband Robert, of Winthrop, and Meredith Lee McManus and husband Harold, of Topsham; his two sons, Jamie Clough, and wife Jessie, of Mount Vernon, and Russell Clough, of Augusta; the mother of his children, Merelyn Jackson, of Rome, Maine; his sister, Rachel Clark, of Augusta; his companion of 10 years, Nancy Crocker, of Winthrop; as well as 11 grandchildren.

Relatives and friends are invited to visit from 10 to 11 a.m. on Friday, May 23, at Roberts Funeral Home and Cremation Service, 62 Bowdoin St., Winthrop, where a celebration of Sonny's life will begin after visiting hours at 11 a.m. Burial with full military honors will immediately follow at Glenside Cemetery, Turkey Lane, Winthrop, after which the family invites everyone back for a reception at the American Legion.

In lieu of flowers, donations in Sonny's memory may be made to American Legion Post 40, 40 Bowdoin St., Winthrop, ME 04364.
