AUGUSTA -- Diane Sheaffer Anderson died peacefully Wednesday, Sept. 25 at the age of 81. She was born in Portland on Feb. 12, 1932, to Lewis John "Jake" and Katharine (Hazzard) Sheaffer, of Gardiner. She attended the Gardiner schools and Walnut Hill School in Natick, Mass., and earned her bachelor's degree from Wheaton College in Norton, Mass., and a master's in biology from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign.

In 1964. she married Burton Richard Anderson, and the couple lived in East Winthrop, raising their daughter, Susan, who was born in 1972.

Diane worked as a lab technician in Worcester, Mass., under Dr. Min-Chueh Chang, co-developer of the birth control pill, and whose research led to in vitro fertilization. After returning to Gardiner, she remained active at Christ Church, and was a longtime volunteer at the Winthrop Grade School library.

Diane's wit and good cheer made her a welcome presence at the bridge table and a tough competitor at other games. She enjoyed travel, visiting Alaska before its statehood, as well as touring the United States, Europe and the Canadian Maritimes. She kept up the family traditions of knitting and needlepoint, and, as a cornerstone of family life, her skill at hostessing created beloved memories at Christmas and other holidays. She was happiest with a cat on her lap.

Diane was predeceased by her parents; and her husband of 49 years, Burton R. Anderson.

She is survived by a sister, Cynthia O. Bean, of Hallowell; a daughter, Susan Edney, of Amesbury, Mass.; a niece, Katharine Damren, of Winthrop; and a nephew, Alexander Olmsted, of Manchester.

The family would like to thank the staff at the Augusta Center for Health and Rehabilitation, Beacon Hospice and Granite Hill Estates for their outstanding care, service and compassion.

In lieu of flowers or donations, the family requests that well-wishers each find a special place in their home, community of worship or on their travels to remember Diane fondly and privately.

A private service will be held in Oak Grove Cemetery, Gardiner.

Arrangements are under the care of Staples Funeral Home, 53 Brunswick Ave., Gardiner.
